Artie Sheltered Workshop Carries on the Craft of Rattan Weaving

Traditional craftsmanship is best preserved when it is experienced, shared, and passed from one generation to the next.

On July 18, employees and family members from China Minsheng Bank’s Binjiang East Road Sub-branch in Guangzhou visited the Artie Sheltered Workshop for an immersive rattan weaving experience. Guided by artisans with disabilities, participants explored the techniques and cultural significance of Guangzhou rattan weaving while creating their own handcrafted pieces.

Throughout the workshop, the artisans shared traditional weaving skills passed down through generations, leading participants of all ages through each step of the creative process. More than learning a craft, the experience fostered meaningful interaction, allowing traditional techniques to be passed from one pair of hands to another through patience, collaboration, and shared creativity.

As a district-level Intangible Cultural Heritage Protection Unit and Intangible Cultural Heritage Workshop, Artie is committed to preserving Guangzhou rattan weaving through contemporary practice while creating inclusive employment opportunities. By opening the workshop to the community, Artie continues to connect cultural heritage with education, social inclusion, and everyday life.

Through every hands-on experience, Artie believes traditional craftsmanship is not only preserved, but brought to life — ensuring Guangzhou rattan weaving continues to thrive as a living heritage for future generations.
